Abstract

Depuis les années 1980 et surtout 1990, les économies américaine et britannique faisaient figure d'exemples à suivre pour tirer parti de la mondialisation. Leur dynamisme contrastait en effet avec la situation des pays d'Europe continentale, confrontés à une croissance faible et au chômage de masse. Catherine Mathieu et Henri Sterdyniak analysent les principales caractéristiques du capitalisme anglo-saxon : libéral dans ses principes, ce modèle s'appuie sur une flexibilité marquée du marché du travail, une forte capacité d'innovation, des dépenses publiques limitées et des politiques conjoncturelles actives. Il comporte toutefois des déséquilibres importants : la croissance est inégalitaire et repose en grande partie sur l'endettement, ce qui compromet sa durabilité. La crise qui a commencé en juillet 2007 peut être interprétée comme celle de ce modèle.
