The French sugar colonies, victims of international trade liberalization of the 1860s?

Abstract

This paper shows how old French colonial sugars were sacrificed to protect international trade liberalization during the i86o's. In order to preserve government fiscal resources (duties) after trade liberalization particularly on coffee, foreign sugar and cacao, French politicians decided to increase tariffs on colonial sugar. This decision caused difficulties on sugar sector in French colonies.
