Abstract

Even today, the defence strategies of the European Union member states are not homogeneous. NATO remains the main cement of European military solidarity. Europe remains first and foremost an efficient economic entity, part of a process of increasing globalisation. The European Defence Union (EDU), a complex objective, is likely to constitute an interesting solution, particularly in the search for a sharing of costs. It could be expressed in the choice of common equipment and the development of a defence industrial market, but the importance of defence agreements with the United States significantly reduces their potential. Studies on the economic advantages of the Union highlighted its interest, but a great deal of industrial restructuring would then have to be undertaken, particularly if American disengagement in Europe were to be confirmed.
