Abstract

The Commission was mandated to analyse the economic and financial conditions of Western European security. Its main questions were highlighted. Is external economic dependence a factor of insecurity and if so, should Europe engage in a common, coherent and supranational strategy? Can the alliances of European companies modify global competition and should they be part of an autonomous industrial strategy? Europe's place in world trade, its economic relations with the United States, Japan, Africa, as well as the economic development of Europe's least developed countries are analysed. The economy is an essential element of security. The question of the solidarity and interdependence of European states must be raised, especially in the economic order.
