Abstract

The arms race is expensive for a national economy. A comparison of military spending, a comparative analysis and the economic impact of the defence effort on the economies of France and the United Kingdom highlight the comparative weights of national security in the two countries. The analysis of arms industries, the importance of jobs linked to a country's security and the capital-labour substitution of military spending all shed light on the influence of security factors on national economies.
