Abstract

Depuis une trentaine d'années, le secteur de l'entretien et de la réparation automobile a connu de nombreux changements économiques et technologiques. Alors que les « petits garages » semblaient voués à disparaître, les modes de production des services d'entretien et de réparation mobilisés par les artisans indépendants et leur capacité à « requalifier » les processus de production du service de réparation leur ont permis de structurer un contre-modèle à l'origine de leur pérennité. Dans cet article, en nous appuyant sur la théorie des conventions, nous examinons ce contre-modèle au sein duquel les connaissances jouent un rôle essentiel. Sur le plan technique, nous montrons que les artisans parviennent à accéder aux connaissances techniques nécessaires en dépit d'un accès limité par les constructeurs. Sur le plan marchand, nous analysons comment le maintien de ces acteurs de la réparation se fonde sur la contestation des savoirs dominants quant aux besoins des clients.
