Abstract

L'effet de la localisation spatiale sur l'efficacité productive de la firme est examiné. Les firmes rurales, urbaines ou périurbaines obtiennent le même niveau moyen d'efficacité alors qu'elles sont dotées de caractéristiques très différentes, notamment en termes de structures d'emploi et de caractéristiques des personnes employées. Pour expliquer ce résultat surprenant l'auteur propose un modèle au sein duquel l'efficacité productive du travail peut se décomposer entre la qualité du facteur travail utilisé et l'intensité de l'effort fourni durant l'acte productif. Pour tester ce modèle, on utilise des données statistiques relatives aux firmes individuelles, mais également les résultats d'une enquête spécifique destinée à fournir une mesure de l'intensité de l'effort. L'auteur montre que l'intensité plus grande de l'effort consenti en milieu rural, liée à un coût réel plus élevé d'une éventuelle perte d'emploi, permet de compenser le plus faible niveau de qualité du facteur travail.
