Abstract

This article describes and interprets the behaviour of agricultural unionism at the national level in the face of the CAP reform. This reform has been a critical test for the agricultural profession in that it has called into question the productivist logic upon which the CAP was based. In contrast to the 1960s and early 1970s, the majority tendency during the more recent reform process has been essentially defensive. The reason for this arises from three discontinuities within the history of agricultural unionism: with regard to the unions' investment in the CAP, with regard to their internal management and with regard to their relationship with political power.
