Abstract

In suckler farm systems, climatic conditions are a main factor with an impact on technico-economic results. Could adapting the stocking rate help farmers lower risks tied to climatic conditions? In order to answer this question, this study compares the results of surveys carried out on suckler farms in the Charolais and results obtained through bioeconomic modelling. In both cases, climate sensitivity is evaluated based on 3 criterions: average technico-economic results over the studied period, standard deviation and correlation of their interannual variations with variations in forage yield. Feed supplementation and using grassland for pasture are the two main levers which farmers can juggle with. Farmers that have a lower stock ingrate have fewer unexpected expenses, which smoothes out income irregularities, with no significant change in average income over a 20-year period.
