Abstract

Cet article propose un survol de la littérature récente, essentiellement empirique, sur lespréférences pour la redistribution. Alors que les inégalités de revenu et de patrimoine ontsignificativement augmenté ces dernières décennies dans la plupart des pays occidentaux, lademande de redistribution n'a pas évolué selon les prédictions des principaux modèlesd'économie politique. En outre, les trajectoires sont très différentes entre les pays, souvent sanslien apparent avec celles des inégalités. L'objectif de cet article est de comprendre les raisonsd'une telle hétérogénéité internationale. Pour cela nous étudions les facteurssocioéconomiques, culturels, historiques ou de conjoncture économique qui peuventinfluencer ces préférences. Nous distinguons également la redistribution comme demande decouverture sociale ou comme demande de justice sociale. Un fil directeur concerne lesperceptions souvent biaisées de la réalité pouvant justifier, pour des individus ayant despréférences fondamentales identiques, un souhait de redistribution différent.
