Abstract

These last twenty years have been characterized by the progressive importance of the ecological, societal and social concerns in the management of companies. The observation of the effective integration of the principles of sustainable development in small and medium-sized enterprises suggests nevertheless some nuances. On the one hand, the intensity of the long-lasting commitment of firms is characterized by a somewhat heterogeneousness. It oscillates between the absence of answer and the proactive attitude. On the other hand, when this commitment exists, the sustainable orientation varies: companies can lay the emphasis on the ecological, social or societal aspects. To analyze the differences of intensity and orientation of SMEs' responsible commitment, this article bases itself on the stakeholder's theory and develops three categories of proposal. The latter form the frame of the empirical study. Three case studies are led within SMEs in the sector of the metal industry. They reveal the significant but not exclusive influence of the stakeholders in the strategic responsible commitment of SMEs, both in terms of intensity and orientation.
