Abstract

Our research addresses the following question: how to explain female under representation in IT jobs and the remaining idea that these jobs carry a male character? In particular, we provide a conceptual lens to the study of the phenomenon of the sustainability of this idea by having for main idea that this could be explained by an often problematic construction of the professional identity of women working in IT areas caused by an overlapping with gender identity. Based on the theory of structuration, this research aims to study the interactions between people working together with the main objective to detect the movements that favor or disadvantage the stereotype articulated around gender and IT jobs. The main contribution to this research is to bring a new understanding of the idea that IT jobs carry a male character. This research can also give a methodological tool to lead other studies in areas with a male or female character in spites of efforts to open them. It will soon be used to study the practices within the projects of a company providing IT services. Finally the managerial contribution of this study is to improve the diversity management actions in favor of a better a rebalancing between men and women in IT jobs.
