Abstract

This article proposes to place the entrepreneurial university model in a historical perspective in order to better appreciate the nature of the changes observed within the university system since the end of the 20th century. The entrepreneurial university, committed to the economic exploitation of research results and developing partnerships with the economic world, has established itself as a model guiding the transformation of the university system throughout the world since the 1980s and has given rise to numerous debates. Considering the evolution of universities since their medieval origins, it appears that their close links with the economic world are at the heart of this evolution. Moreover, the university system is made of diversity and the experience shows that considering a unique model of entrepreneurial university to lead the transformation of the institution is too restrictive.
