Integrating migrants in European workplaces: Multi-paradigm perspectives on narrative approaches

This paper develops a framework for researching the integration of migrants in organizations in Europe. It examines the use of narrative approaches to study interrelationships between organizations and migrants, with particular reference to their integration experiences and strategies. More specifically, the paper reflects on the potential of adopting meso-level analyses of organizational practices that remain sensitive to macro and micro level actors and issues. The discussion distinguishes between critical, interpretivist and functionalist perspectives, discussing how each of these could be deployed in research seeking to understand social practices and their implications, and to develop practical intervention strategies. It subsequently discusses a number of methodological challenges and opportunities for research adopting different paradigmatic approaches. The paper concludes by identifying a range of research and practical implications of using narratives to understand and transform interactions between organizations and migrants, leading to mutually beneficial integration experiences.
