Abstract

Horse ownership by individuals who take care of their horses themselves outside any professional equestrian structure has recently developed in France. Besides, little is known about these horses, their owners and the way they use land. Exhaustive data has been collected in the field and analyzed through econometric modeling. The results highlight some first features and determining factors of this new use of the French countryside. Thus, the presence of these horses and their access to land is explained by different factors that are related to the current transformations of the horse industry and of the rural and suburban areas. A projection of the results at the national level underlines first elements about areas that could offer the highest opportunities or threats to the development of this equestrian activity. This work underlines the importance of taking into account the development of individual horse owners in land management and it offers an original methodology to understand this diffuse activity.
