Abstract

L'expression "religion populaire" désigne habituellement dans les sciences sociales le pôle de la pratique et du vécu, par opposition à celui du prescrit, du discours, de la "théorie", qui est celui des théologiens, des prêtres et des militants. D'une façon générale, la "culture populaire" est souvent réduite soit aux aspects folkloriques, soit aux formes vulgarisées de la seule culture digne de ce nom, la culture savante ou lettrée (Pierre Bourdieu), comme si les gens du peuple étaient incapables d'une maîtrise explicite des conceptions du monde, religieuses, politiques ou autres ; la notion de "religion populaire" renvoie surtout aux pratiques festives, au culte des saints guérisseurs, aux "croyances traditionnelles", etc.
