Le désinvestissement face au risque de défaillance en contexte PME : une approche exploratoire

Abstract

La littérature récente sur le désinvestissement s'attache à étudier ses effets sur la performance des entreprises. Le désinvestissement est ainsi vu comme un choix rationnel permettant une réallocation des ressources dans un but d'amélioration des performances. Or, les résultats de ces études sont mitigés et le désinvestissement ne semble pas systématiquement synonyme de performances améliorées. Parallèlement, les travaux sur les causes de ce désinvestissement sont rares et se bornent à mettre en avant le déclin des performances et le risque de faillite encouru. Nous proposons en conséquence de mener une étude exploratoire des facteurs favorisant le désinvestissement dans des PME françaises. Nous développons une série d'hypothèses à partir d'une approche en termes de ressources et d'inertie décisionnelle en distinguant le désinvestissement en personnel et en immobilisations. Nous montrons que la brutalité de la dégradation de la situation a clairement un impact, plus nettement perceptible pour le désinvestissement en personnel que sur celui en termes d'investissement. La volatilité du risque de défaillance dans le secteur est également un facteur accroissant la probabilité de désinvestissement. Symétriquement, l'appartenance à un secteur où la connaissance est importante diminue la probabilité de désinvestissement, notamment en personnel.
