Les banques du groupe CIC et l'industrie : une approche différenciée (1859-1939)

Abstract

Deux facteurs antagonistes déterminent les relations entre les banques du groupe CIC et l'industrie : des statuts de départ très restrictifs, mais l'implication des industriels dans la fondation des banques locales. Comment se joue cette tension entre mise à distance et relation de proximité. On peut distinguer 3 phases : jusqu'en 1882, les banques tendent à diverger, malgré leur patrimoine génétique commun, en expérimentant diverses solutions pour briser, le cas échéant, le carcan des statuts. D'où le constat de la fin du XIXe siècle au début de la Grande Guerre, d'une nette opposition entre deux stratégies, la fidélité au métier originel de banque de dépôts ou la pratique de la banque mixte. L'entre-deux-guerres est la période la plus complexe, car le groupe CIC intègre des banques régionales aux cultures très variées, mais il exerce davantage son autorité sur le groupe en définissant une ligne-maison. Le multiculturalisme fait désordre et conduit finalement à un effort de convergence.
