Abstract

La visée de cet ouvrage est de resituer le tourisme au sein d'une approche compréhensive de l'évolution des sociétés. Intimement liée à l'émergence de la démocratie et à celle du capitalisme, l'industrie touristique inscrit son devenir dans le concept non de masse mais de classe. La réflexion initiée par Catherine Sicart et Jean-Michel Hoerner conduit du message humaniste, précurseur de l'idéal démocratique, des " maîtres de vie ", à un essai d'identification de la classe moyenne supérieure du tourisme, nouvelle leisure class telle que théorisée par Veblen en 1899. L'étude exploratoire de l'élaboration du monde moderne, puis des mutations du capitalisme et de l'avènement du mondialisme, ouvre sur le rôle du tourisme international et son succès social de type élitiste exprimé par la mise en mouvement annuelle de quelque 700 millions de personnes, soit 10 % de la population mondiale, qui bénéficient du surplus de patrimoine financier (supérieur à 20 000 milliards de dollars en 2013). Un éclairage original sur une industrie en complet bouleversement.
