Abstract

We propose a reading of the second Faust in the light of Goethe's interest for economic matters. This interest is first discussed in regard to the choice of the literary shape; then the general economic argument of it is presented; the third part discusses the creation of paper money, the founding act of the economic new world; the fourth insists on the negativity of the Faustian spirit at work in capitalism. We conclude about the critical significance of this tragedy for today's economic order.
