Abstract

A large majority of socialist schools born in France at the turn of the 1830s condemned the notion of luxury. Dominated by the call for solidarity and association, new industrial societies were instead obliged to give priority to ensuring what was necessary and useful. Alone among these socialist schools, the Fourierists continued to emphasize luxury, which it associated with the cardinal category of pleasure. After a brief overview of the positions taken up by these fledgling schools on the notion of luxury, this article goes on to explore more specifically the position of Charles Fourier and the Fourierists.
