Abstract

How philosophers and economists interpret the evolution of luxury consumption in the eighteenth-century? Based on the article "Luxe" of the Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des arts et des métiers, written by Jean-François de Saint-Lambert and traders discussions about the quality of gold and silver goods, this paper aims to capture the various luxury consumers profiles and the notion of quality in luxury goods as perceived in the eighteenth-century.
