Abstract

This article studies the role of women in French universities. From a survey of 1,956 Assistant and full Professors in universities, we show that women have less access than men to full Professor positions, because of the existence of "glass ceiling". It generally appears that men are more satisfied than women. As for the affective and normative commitment, women are less committed than men when they are assistant professor, but the trend is reversed or reduced when they become full Professor. In addition, we present the results of an in-depth qualitative analysis focused on how women see their progression within their institution.
