Abstract

La situation de l'emploi et du travail en France et dans de nombreux pays comparables est marquée par la persistance d'un chômage ou d'un sous-emploi important, et par le nombre des emplois précaires. Les perspectives paraissent aggravées par l'extension irrésistible de l'économie numérique, qui semble fragiliser l'existence du salariat.Certains remettent en cause la nécessité du travail dans la société. D'autres soulignent que par le passé les grandes révolutions techniques ont toujours fait craindre une immense diminution de l'emploi, et qu'il n'en a rien été. Certains escomptent au contraire que les nouveaux besoins, notamment ceux liés à la transition énergétique, puissent être créateurs d'emploi.Quels sont les arguments d'observation, statistique en particulier, qui viennent étayer ces diagnostics, et ces pronostics divergents ? De quelles marges de manoeuvre les gouvernements disposent-ils pour infléchir l'évolution économique et du marché du travail ? En son état actuel, l'appareil statistique éclaire-t-il suffisamment ces questions ?
