Abstract

On se pose en s'opposant. C'est ce que dût se dire Léon Walras lorsqu'il entreprit, aidé par les notes de son père Auguste, de réfuter « La Justice dans la Révolution et dans l'Église » de Proudhon. Cette critique conjointe de Proudhon par les deux Walras est intéressante autant par le fond que par la forme. Au-delà des querelles de définition, au-delà de l'imprécision de nombreuses affirmations de Proudhon, le fond révèle des désaccords théoriques toujours d'actualité sur des points cruciaux comme le progrès économique et la division du travail, l'existence ou non de lois naturelles intangibles, le rôle de la monnaie, l'assiette de l'impôt. Quant à la forme, elle dévoile chez les trois protagonistes de la controverse davantage d'aveuglement que de doute scientifique.
