Abstract

Sustainable development, a new environmental paradigm, influences slightly the southern countries. The choices of urban models are still placed on the economic at first, then the environmental and latter on the social. Political and financial stakes are important for preserved areas in cities and also for those who live there. This paper presents a preliminary ethnographic study of a socio-environmental project from a school community in southern Brazil. The school plays a vital role in the evolution of participatory democratic practices and the protection of natural and local socio-cultural heritage, as well as the political commitment of the anthropologist.
