Abstract

Since the 1970?s, Algeria?s dependency on hydrocarbons has dramatically increased. In the last decade, this sector has represented more than 40% of GDP. The country suffers from Dutch disease symptoms such as deindustrialization and increases in prices of non tradable goods and services, and also from a structural lack of diversification of its economy. Moreover, the institutional management of hydrocarbon revenues suffers from a lack of strategic vision, transparency and a stable legal framework. In order to fully benefit from oil windfalls, Algeria crucially needs economic and political diversification that will ensure durable growth and social stability.
