Abstract

This research deals with the relations between territory, social capital, governance and the State. The choice of Kabylia (Algeria) as a case study is justified by the survival of its villages governance system, by the intensity of social ties and the importance of the environmental social capital. Through this case study, the authors intend to answer the following two central questions: what are the links between identity(ies) and the various types of social capital? Is there complementarity or not between the action of the State and the villages governance system? To answer them, a qualitative exploratory survey on the Kabylian identity was led. The main results show that the identification by the territory is strong for the Kabyles and that the territory generates identity. Finally, in a comprehensive perspective, the various notions and the results are presented under the shape of a scheme which raises the question of the identity in the viable territorial development.
