Abstract

The vitality of rural areas goes through the valuation of all assets likely to boost the living conditions of rural communities. Terroir products can enable to create prosperity in villages, and use cultural identity as an inexhaustible source for new economic activities. The aim of our paper is to focus on the observation of facts in rural Quebec where profound changes are under way in the food sector, connecting it to a traditional industry (basketry) from a Kabyle village, example of a site of ancient craft. By comparing between the emergence of a new rural economy in Quebec and a traditional activity in a Kabyle rural area, we will show that the success of the one and the other depends on similar strategies. The South and the North have interest in sharing their experiences in order to better meet the challenges of globalization.
