Abstract

Since more than 30 years, satellites as relay of telecommunication or as instruments for earth observation, takes part into the transformation of our vision of the territories we act in or we represent as well. Its specific value is difficult to define or prove. Its contribution stayed mostly unknown for a large range of people. It is embedded within complex things-like phone communications, networks, digital models-, masked by various social operators like scientist-i.e. climatologist-, or public institutions like IGN, IFREMER or Meteo France. Looking for tools to help public decider to appreciate the value of satellite missions for earth observation, CNES – Centre National d'Etudes spatiales-open a reflection about the value of space data for the society. Crossing Epistemology, sociology, Science Studies and innovation this reflection faces the concept of « territory ». This paper draws lines for a research agenda on « satellite and territory ». We assume that a territory could be defined as something built by people to interact with environment.
