Abstract

Emerging economies are experiencing the first wave of an energy transition, and their current policies in the electricity sector offer thought provoking cases. Three emerging economies in South America – Argentina, Brazil and Chile – display proactive public policies and offer contrasted situations regarding design and implementation of measures focussing on renewable sources for electricity. In order to promote new sources of renewable energy (NER), Argentina selected fiscal incentives and feed-in tariffs, Brazil opted for energy auctions and Chile chose a regulatory approach. In this paper we analize theses policies, their scope, tolls and efficiency in view of the ambitious targets selected by governments for NER by 2025-2030. Taking into account current policy updates, technology deployment and resource mobilization we also consider prospects for energy mixthat would confirm the energy transition trend.
