Abstract

La conjoncture britannique s'est dégradée depuis l'automne. Après quatre trimestres consécutifs de hausse, le PIB a baissé de 0,5 % au dernier trimestre 2010. Cette chute d'activité est en partie due à un climat exceptionnellement rigoureux en décembre qui, selon l'institut de statistiques britannique, l'ONS, aurait coûté 0,5 point de croissance sur le trimestre. Cela signifie qu'hors effets climatiques exceptionnels, la croissance aurait été nulle. Le taux de chômage a atteint 8 % (au sens du BIT) en janvier 2011. L'inflation accélère et était de 4,4 % sur un an en mars, en termes d'indice des prix à la consommation harmonisé (IPCH), au lieu de 3,1 % six mois plus tôt. Le déficit public a atteint 10,2 % du PIB en 2010, portant la dette publique à 76 % du PIB. Le gouvernement a mis en place l'un des plans de rigueur les plus sévères de l'histoire britannique, devant ramener le solde public, hors dépenses d'investissement, à l'équilibre en 2016.
