Abstract

Alors que nombre de pays européens sont confrontés à un chômage croissant et persistant, le Royaume-Uni enregistre depuis 1994 un repli marqué de son taux de chômage (6,4 % au début de 1998 après 10,5 % cinq ans plus tôt). Selon les autorités, cette performance serait liée à la déréglementation du marché du travail et aux changements introduits depuis presque deux décennies dans les modes de gestion du rapport salarial. La décentralisation des négociations aurait permis aux entreprises de mieux s'ajuster, de créer davantage d'emplois, et en plus d'abaisser le taux de chômage d'équilibre, les salaires faisant preuve d'un remarquable contrôle à cette phase du cycle économique (...).
