Abstract

Etymologiquement, le mot festival vient de " fête ". D'un point de vue anthropologique, un festival est un temps, sacré ou profane, de célébrations marqué par des observances spéciales. De nos jours un festival est une série de manifestations culturelles et de représentations artistiques qui couvrent des champs aussi variés que la musique, le théâtre, la danse, l'opéra, le cinéma, voire la gastronomie. Du festival marqueur d'une identité communautaire, on a progressivement glissé vers la célébration publique thématisée . Ce basculement à permit d'ouvrir le champ du public visé si bien que le festival moderne a pour ambition de faire venir des spectateurs qui, s'ils passent au moins une nuit à destination, deviennent des touristes. Nous allons voir que si le festival a longtemps été considéré comme un élément moteur du tourisme culturel, il tend de plus en plus à être apparenté à un produit évènementiel au service du développement touristique du territoire parce que les enjeux pour ce territoire sont loin d'être négligeables tant en termes de retombées socio-économiques qu'en termes de notoriété.
