Abstract

The presence of participatory practices and the willingness of management to engage with workers' representatives have an effect on workers' health. The study presented here bases its criteria on the actual governance of a firm rather than its legal form, but it is not surprising that there are SCOP worker cooperatives among the firms selected for the "participatory" category. The article first of all shows to what extent an authoritarian approach in managing humanresources and poor industrial relations affect workers' health, particularly depression and anxiety-related disorders. Personal recognition is once again a central issue. The authors also try to identify characteristics specific to cooperatives. Besides the potential for human and social progress, the minimal economic impact of the issue at the microeconomic level of the firm acquires much greater significance on the national level. If health professionals were to understand the uniqueness of the sector, the experiences of the formal social economy could help point the way for future public policy in a global economy
