Abstract

Le tremblement de terre de Lisbonne. La ville, de la rive du fleuve s'étageant sur les collines, étincelle de blancheur. Dans son Don Juan, un siècle plus tôt, Tirso de Molina en a parlé comme de la huitième merveille du monde. Bien que l'automne soit avancé, la température de ce matin est clémente : 17,5°. Un vent léger souffle du nord-est, aidant une foule de navires à manoeuvrer en tous sens sur l'immense plan d'eau. De près, les rues sont étroites, héritées de l'époque moyenâgeuse, tortueuses parfois, souvent malpropres quoique les maisons soient blanchies à la chaux, et l'on ne voit aucune vitre aux fenêtres, masquées de jalousies de bois ressemblant à celles des confessionnaux, comme l'a noté un capucin français y ayant séjourné quelques mois. Ce samedi de Toussaint, les cloches ont sonné dans l'air calme pour la messe de 9h, assez peu fréquentée. Passé 9h30, chacun entend un fort grondement sourd, effrayant...
