Abstract

In this paper, our objective is to analyse historical and contemporary transformations of museums as the quest for new dimensions of the value of the collection. A museum's collection forms a manageable platform of works of art, from which the organization tries to activate new valuations. This communication presents a genealogical model of the museum which demonstrates that management practices and knowledge have always been present in museums, since their invention during the 18th century. The case study of the Musée du Louvre, especially the design process of a new museum in the north of France, provides empirical insights on how a century-old institution explores new potentials of value.
