Abstract

This paper investigates a case of art museum design. The Louvre-Lens, a new branch of the Musée du Louvre, is currently being designed by a dedicated team within the Parisian museum. Based on a two-year intervention-research, this case study explores the various parameters and managerial issues that are being undertaken during the design process, and proposes a typology of these design parameters. The case reveals a renewal in museum functions towards an exhibition-oriented museum. Combined with an historical framework of museum functions and design parameters since the birth of the modern museum in the middle of 18th century Western Europe, this empirical analysis contributes to deepen knowledge in contemporary shifts in museum design and managerial practice.
