Abstract

This paper studies competition for the market. The origin of the concept can be found in Sir E. Chadwick and Walras?s works. It was rediscovered by Demsetz. It is now a key element of the regulation of natural monopoly or oligopoly industries. Auctioning the right to be a monopolist is analyzed in a first time. The complementarity between price regulation and competition for the right to serve the market is examined. We prove that the usual mechanisms used to grant licences to the highest offer or the lowest sale price firm are not optimal. They are dominated by more complex implementation mechanisms. Finally competition for and within the field is analyzed. A key element is the choice of the ex post market structure resulting from a trade-off between the advantages and disadvantatges of the two types of competition.
