Abstract

An industrial catastrophe often has a long lasting effect far beyond its immediate consequences. Five years later, what are the consequences of the AZF explosion in Toulouse (2001) for persons living near the plant? How have the legal arrangements set up a month after the accident in order to provide a rapid, flexible and fair compensation indemnity worked? Why did the information the victims received often turn out to be insufficient or inadequate? The article provides critical insight based on empirical evidence gathered during a three years field study on the limits affecting the efficiency of the reparation plan.
