Abstract

What are the means of scientific work on Cambodian history ? Two related ways have been selected here : 1 - A systematic study of the knowledge transmitted by colonial historians. 2 - A re-construction of all the so called "datas" by using a convenient theoritical frame. Especially, a consistent study in terms of inter ethnic relationships, enabling one to break with ideological. commonplaces, can't be carried out unless it is apprehended through an accurate analysis of the class-system. If that analysis is to be enlightening, one can't be satisfied with a mere opposition between "sweaters" and "sweated" (and/or rulers and dependants), but it should permit to apprehend the complexity of the Cambodian "formation sociale" i.e. a specific combination of several "modes de production". (1) "Mode de production" et "Formation sociale" about these two concepts see N. Poulantzas "Pouvoir politique et classes sociales", Paris, Maspero, 1968 -Political Power and Social Classes' [1978] New York
