Abstract

Cet article analyse le rôle de catalyseur que jouent les scandales médiatiques et processus de boucémissairisation dans la contestation d'une firme multinationale par ses parties prenantes périphériques. En nous basant sur les travaux de l'anthropologue René Girard, nous montrons que ces scandales médiatiques correspondent à des modalités de résolution de conflits dans des contextes de faible régulation des institutions. Nous mobilisons tout d'abord la métaphore du bouc-émissaire pour décrire les composantes du processus qui mène à l'émergence d'une contestation : la convergence de la contestation vers une cible unique, la dénonciation publique des pratiques irresponsables et la contagion à d'autres organisations. Nous identifions ensuite les trois conditions nécessaires à l'émergence d'un phénomène de bouc-émissairisation : l'existence de conflits non résolus, une potentielle victime de substitution et une culpabilité de cette victime jugée suffisamment crédible. Nous concluons sur les principales implications de cette recherche en matière de political CSR et stakeholder politics.
