Abstract

Au XIXe siècle, l'économie politique accapare la légitimité du discours sur la pauvreté : seule l'économie, science neuve formulant des lois naturelles, peut fournir une analyse théorique de la pauvreté, expliquer ses causes et proposer des solutions pour la supprimer. Trois positions sont analysées. Ricardo illustre la position libérale, fondée sur la mise en lumière de lois naturelles qui gouvernent le système économique et qui restreignent les possibilités d'agir sur la pauvreté : la pauvreté est inéluctable. Marx reprend à Ricardo certaines lois immanentes, mais introduit l'historicité du système capitaliste et son remplacement inéluctable par le socialisme. Enfin Walras propose une solution réformiste rendue possible par la reconnaissance d'une sphère de l'économie où les considérations de justice ont toute leur place, sans avoir à subir des lois économiques contraignantes.
