Abstract

Questo articolo spiega come la Rivoluzione cubana sia riuscita a costruire, partendo dalla situazione di svantaggio di un piccolo Paese del Sud privo di risorse naturali – e sotto le sanzioni statunitensi – un sistema sanitario pubblico completo, universale, efficace e gratuito (Sezione 1). Esamina poi le origini e lo sviluppo delle industrie farmaceutiche e biotecnologiche locali (Sezione 2), nonché i principali attori della ricerca medica e i loro recenti progressi (Sezione 3). Presenta poi la cooperazione medica internazionale di Cuba (Sezione 4) e le sue missioni sanitarie internazionaliste (Sezione 5). Analizza inoltre le misure adottate sull'isola dalle autorità sanitarie contro la pandemia di COVID-19 (Sezione 6) e, infine, l'originalità dei sistemi sanitari e di ricerca medica nel quadro di una società socialista (Sezione 7), nonché i problemi che devono affrontare, in gran parte attribuibili all'embargo statunitense (Sezione 8).
