Abstract

In 2022, Jean-Yves Naudet published a brief history of Aix economists. This book expands on this first version. Its purpose is to "tell the story of economists from Aix and Marseille, academics from state and independent faculties, as well as non-academics, members of academies or other institutions" (p. 11). It covers the period 1808-1971. 1808 is the date of creation of the Société des sciences, lettres, agriculture et arts d'Aix, which in 829 became the Académie des sciences, agriculture, arts et belles-lettres d'Aix. 1971 is the date Jean-Yves Naudet was recruited as an assistant. The book does not feature any economists recruited from 1971 onwards. It only deals with economists who have died or retired (p. 11). The book is introduced by a history of the Faculty of Law of Aix (pp. 13-19) and is then organized around two parts. The first deals with the precursors at the Academy of Aix (Chapter 1), in Marseille (Chapter 2) and at the University (Chapter 3); the second presents the successors with the same spatial logic, at the Academy of Aix (Chapter 1), in Marseille (Chapter 2) and at the University (Chapter 3). It concludes with a history of the places of teaching and research of political economy in these two cities of France, Aix and Marseille [The buildings of the University in the Middle Ages to the present day (pp. 169-183)].
