Granularity And Dynamic Aspects Of Generic Business Process Warehousing

Abstract

Quick response times, ad-hoc queries, and productive system relief are, among others, the most important reasons for the use of enterprise data warehouse systems (DWH). The fixed-structured multi-dimensional data model such as Star schema allows OLAP functionalities to be pre-programmed and executed by an OLAP engine or OLAP processor without the need to any programming activities. In opposite of data warehouse fixed structures, which are based on the static model, structures of business processes are dynamic. Business process analysts focus on the analysis of changing of processes over the time and their behaviour. Therefore, it is not sufficient using traditional DWH just to investigate information about aggregates process-related key figures like total execution time or cost. On the other hand, mapping a business processes in a classic data warehouse requires predefinition of fixed process specifications in advance which lacks the detection of changing of business process e.g., adding new activities or new workflow instance. This paper presents a conceptual and abstract generic data model for analysis to adopt any business processes considering the dynamic aspect of it in data warehouse system.
