Abstract

" Objective - Despite several governmental initiatives, the implementation of inclusive education for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) remains a struggle for Mauritius. Past literature has been focusing on the challenges faced by SEN in education, but research on the solutions, like the tools that can be used to improve the transfer of knowledge to SEN students, is very limited. Methodology/Technique - The objectives were to evaluate the effectiveness of the Knowledge Transfer (KT) tools categorized as devices, image-based and play and to identify the most effective KT tool. Quantitative data was gathered through a survey questionnaire from 55 OTs which was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and Microsoft Excel 2019 Findings - One of the key roles of an Occupational Therapist (OT) is to enable SEN students' participation and integration in daily school activities. Hence, this study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of knowledge transfer tools which were used by OTs with SEN students to promote learning. Out of 29 KT tools, toy was ranked as the most effective KT tool used by the OTs followed by games and songs which has been illustrated by a KT model. Novelty - As SEN students experience cognitive delays, there is a need for alternative ways of transferring knowledge to them, which can easily be assimilated. Therefore, this study is a stepping stone towards the exploration of new tools which can be used to transfer learning in an effective and, at the same time, enjoyable way to SEN students to promote academic success.
