Abstract

A boa nutrição é fundamental para se construírem vidas saudáveis, meios de subsistência fortes e resilientes, e economias prósperas. Em sua ausência, a construção é feita em areia movediça. Crianças com atraso de crescimento não se desenvolvem adequadamente e, em especial, demonstram problemas de insuficiência cerebral e do sistema imunológico. Mulheres desnutridas em idade reprodutiva não têm ferro suficiente no sangue para alimentar seus músculos. Muitos adultos apresentam tanto excesso de peso que colocam seu coração e pulmões em estresse extremo e podem ter diabetes, hipertensão e doenças cardíacas. A desnutrição leva a 11 por cento do produto nacional bruto ser desperdiçado em consequência de mortes, menos aprendizado na escola, menor renda salarial e dias perdidos com doença. E as mães desnutridas estão mais propensas a dar à luz recém-nascidos desnutridos, perpetuando a transmissão intergeracional da pobreza. A desnutrição corrói o corpo, a economia e o futuro. As ambições de alcançar um desenvolvimento sustentável são prejudicadas com sua presença.
