Abstract

Una buena nutrición es fundamental para promover vidas saludables, medios de subsistencia sólidos y resistentes, y economías prósperas. Sin ella, estos empeños se asientan sobre terreno inestable. Los niños con retraso de crecimiento no pueden crecer ni desarrollarse adecuadamente, y padecen en especial problemas de daño cerebral y sistemas inmunes debilitados. Las mujeres malnutridas en edad fértil no tienen suficiente hierro en la sangre para alimentar sus músculos. Muchos adultos tienen tanto sobrepeso que someten a su corazón y sus pulmones a un estrés extremo y pueden sufrir de diabetes, hipertensión y enfermedad del corazón. La malnutrición conduce a un desperdicio del 11 por ciento del producto interno bruto como resultado de la pérdida de vidas, el menor aprendizaje en la escuela, la disminución de ingresos por trabajo y los días perdidos por bajas médicas.
