Investigación agrícola pública en América Latina y el Caribe: Tendencias de capacidad e inversión

Abstract

En 2006, la región LAC empleaba a más de 19.000 investigadores ETC en agricultura e invirtió 3.000 millones $ en I&D agropecuario (en precios constantes de 2005), lo que corresponde a un 1,14 por ciento de la producción agrícola total de la región. Sin embargo, el 70 por ciento de esta cifra correspondía a tan solo tres países: Argentina, Brasil y México. Si se excluyese a los “tres grandes”, las inversiones en I&D agropecuario de la región como porcentaje del PIB Ag serían sustancialmente inferiores (0,72 por ciento). Las inversiones en toda la región crecieron un 1,1 por ciento anual durante el período 1981–2006 pero este promedio oculta diferencias significativas en el tiempo y entre países.
